Beautiful island of Grenada
by katie
In November 2013 I was fortunate enough to be invited to the beautiful island of Grenada in the Caribbean by the Grenadian Tourist Board. The island definitely lives up to its name as the ‘Spice Island’ with the most fertile soil in the Caribbean, there are more spices here per square mile than any other place on the planet! Nutmeg and Mace is the biggest export for Grenada, producing one third of the world’s supply.
For a quiet, relaxing island there is certainly enough to keep you occupied if you don’t want to spend your whole time on one of the glorious beaches. You can take a visit to one of the many beautiful waterfalls on the island, experience the hustle and bustle of the local Saturday market in the capital St George’s or even visit the West Indies Cricket Heritage Centre which shows an insight into the Caribbean social history through cricket.
Grenada compared to many other Caribbean Islands is relatively unspoilt and largely unknown as a holiday destination so is perfect for that get away from it all experience.
Grenada offers a variety of different hotels, self-catering apartments and luxury estates ranging from 3 star for people on a budget right up to 5 star for those people looking for something more luxurious.
I was fortunate to visit and stay at many of the hotels on the island including the beautiful and unique Calabash Hotel. Each morning you start the day with a fantastic breakfast served on your private sea view balcony whilst listening to the birds twittering and the gentle waves lapping on the beach.
Or for those of you who like to be on the beach, a stay at the Spice Island Beach Resort in a Seagrape Beach Suite is a must. As you step out from your patio door in the morning, you feel the powdery sand between your toes before spending your day gazing at the stunning blue sea on your private sunbed or hammock.
So for an island with fantastic friendly people, beautiful hotels and beaches, stunning landscape and a year round climate, I would thoroughly recommend this ‘Island of Spice’.
